Beach BBQ & Brews Festival

Had to check this one out as I hadn’t been to Woodbine Park before.  So, headed to this festival on the Saturday evening (between 5-6pm). [I actually don't have this one listed on my site, but when updating it, I will.]

To get here, took Coxwell bus south to Queen Street. Unfortunately, the bus took forever and when it got to the station, it was not only ended up being packed, but another bus arrived directly after our bus arrived…next time, I would try the Queen Street East streetcar. Got off at Kingston Rd stop and had to walk back towards the Harveys. Once we saw the Big Ferris Wheel, destination was in our sights!

Once inside the park, it actually felt like being at a country fair.  There was a fairly big amusement/rides section – popular with the families – that was situated away from the actual main festival area – great idea. Also, portaloos and wash stations were close by!

There were a handful of Rib vendors (all had line ups) and all priced the same, so no need to look for a better deal.

All the Rib vendors came from the U.S.  and it was your personal choice as to which one you decided to line up at – all had large lineups but all moved quite quickly.

Purchased ribs, pulled pork and chicken combo at $22 and added beans and rice ($1 each) so all in all, it cost us $24 for a good sized portion (it weighed a ton!) that we ended up taking home. For the big eaters out there, you may want to pick up an extra rack of ribs! CASH only!

OMG, the ribs were falling off the bone, awesome sauce and the pulled pork…. to die for! (Hawgs Gone Wild)!!!!

There was a craft beer garden at the opposite side of the ribbers where a smaller line up was happening but quickly got in. Proof of age (ID) was being asked for, so make sure you take it with you if you want to get into the beer garden. It’s CASH only too!

The size of the stage surprised me… it’s HUGE! The band started playing just soon after we arrived – great sound. There were tables n chairs available, but trying to find empty ones were virtually impossible at that time of the day (5-6pm) so we positioned ourselves behind the stage on the hill along with others.

There were other vendors there too and were all positioned on the outskirts of the park along with the Ribbers allowing lots of space in the middle for those who were eating and listening to the music.

Take a blanket with you – it’s much easier than trying to look for empty chairs and more comfy than sitting on the grass.

Overall, it was a good feel. It’s a festival that I can see is not one for everyone, but if you like your meats n beer, and good live music – it’s one you should consider, especially on a beautiful summer’s night. It definitely had a laid-back feel to it. As I mentioned earlier, a country-fairish feel to it!

You definitely gotta try the RIBS if you’re in the vicinity. It doesn’t cost anything to go to it. The RIBS were amazing and totally worth it!!  The festival runs through til Sunday with live reggae music.

Much Music Video Awards

With much hype and build up to it, the awards (‘MMVA’) are happening tonight at City TV’s headquarters along Queen Street West.

Over the past week, construction of the stages, setting up of the scaffolding across the street has probably been giving drivers headaches. Attracting onlookers and the curious (such as myself).

On Friday night and Saturday during the day, many of the artists did soundchecks and rehearsals which definitely attracted a following.  If you happened to be in the vicinity, you may have caught a glimpse of Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez or even Bruno Mars, all for FREE!

Today (Sunday, Jun 19) Queen Street is closed off to the traffic, and crowds will have started gathering just to get a better glimpse of their stars and see the show.  Personally, it’s way too packed for me and I’d rather watch it from the comfort of my home!

If you do head down there, have fun, try not to get squashed and good luck in taking the photos (grab a step ladder!). I’m heading to the Red Carpet on Bloor St today, so will definitely be watching it from home.

Woofstock

Decided to go to Woofstock on the Saturday even though the weatherman said there was going to be rain in the afternoon (there wasn’t much!). King Streetcar was packed, so in future might be best to take the subway as it may be a little less stressful with the dog.

We got there around mid-day and this is what we saw.

There was quite a gathering already and before going through the barriers (set up for traffic), these performers were just starting playing outside of St Lawrence Market.

Once through the barriers, started looking at all the booths that were lined up on both sides of the streets. Didn’t notice much in the way of freebies with bags of doggy food n treats but there were a lot of free samples in dishes for the dogs and coupons given out. CP24 seemed to have a ‘following’ during filming.

And then there’s the dogs who have their owners dress them up just for the occasion. I will add this year’s pix to the gallery but here’s a couple to entertain you.

and another

and one more

There was (as always) a large crowd around the stage (situated beside the Firkin pub), a rescue section at the opposite end, dogs paddling in the fountain and food area for the humans all in the park (Berczy Park).

For some, it was just a little too much to take in for one day…

There were a few of the bars/restaurants that allowed dogs on their patios, but always expect line ups unless you get there early. There was one restaurant (Indian) that took full advantage of the new alcohol laws and offered ‘beer to go’, but most who bought it just hung out around the area with their dogs enjoying the scenery.

My lil one was even keeping her eye on the food in the Jersey Giant…lol

Also, when you see lineups at any of the booths, it usually means free stuff is being given away.  All in all, we stayed WAY longer than we anticipated, ie, most of the day and at the end of it, this was just some of the FREE stuff we collected for our dog.

In future, if you really want to ‘grab’ a lot of Freebies, and can arrange it, try and go the last day and hang out towards the end of it. This is when I believe the stall owners are pretty keen on handing more stuff out for free! Only downside, you’ll miss out on all the shows and fun stuff that you would see during the height of the festival!

I have some video from the day and once I get it edited, shall upload it on YouTube! Hope this helps for future Woofstocks!

Rihanna LOUD Tour

Rihanna was finally coming to Toronto at the ACC.  Her first concert date sold out – this ultimately led to another night in the TDot!

Rihanna taken from one of the screens

Got my tickets months ago and were in Section 120. After experiencing the floors, unless you’re in the first 3 rows (especially if you’re lacking in height), sides are better viewing.  AND, at one of the Madonna concerts, I ended up in the 300 section. Next time, unless it’s for someone whose tickets sell out within secs/mins, I will never buy 300s again – not worth the $$. I call them nosebleeds!

Rihanna on stage in Toronto

B.o.B and J. Cole. were fronting Rihanna but we found they were “too LOUD”. Fortunately, got ear plugs from ACC’s Customer Service – free! Once situated in our seats, we waited with the rest for Rihanna to come on stage… she was late (approx 9:45 pm, were told 9:15), but must say, was well worth the wait. Rihanna took the stage in style…

From start to finish she belted out hit after hit. There were a couple in the middle that weren’t as well known, but her dancing, costumes, dancers, and stage sets/lighting all made it very entertaining.

At the beginning,  there was a sea of cell phone screens pointed straight to Rihanna on stage from the crowds on the floor, made me chuckle. Her costume changes were many, but quick, wasting no time moving on to the next number.

Halfway through, we had a surprise guest come on stage – Drake and boy, did he ever get a welcome. The crowds went wild and he even performed on of his songs. He then came back to sing “What’s My Name” with Rihanna – luckily I still had battery life in my camera and caught it all, as you’ll see below.

Also, during the concert, she was escorted down one side of the floor to a drum set at the opposite end of the arena and banged those suckers for all she was worth.  Luckily, for me, this was directly in front of my section so managed to get it on video (one downside to it was that I had a woman directly in front of me who couldn’t contain herself and waved her arms around – could’ve swore she was in her 4os with her young daughter!) but it came out not too bad! Shall post it on YouTube when I get a chance!

Rihanna performing Shut Up and Drive

Must’ve been the seat I was in cos there was an older woman who was wearing a one piece from the Abba era who couldn’t contain herself throughout the whole concert so you may see her hands popping in an out of the videos I got – I tried to keep her out of it, but her hand kept on wanting to take the spotlight from Rihanna.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the Rihanna’s concert. Well choreographed (although Rihanna is no Lady Gaga) , she sounded great live and gave a wonderful long, entertaining show.

Rihanna provocatively on stage

Coming out for an encore, to red and white confetti falling from the whole length of the ACC ceiling, the concert finally had to come to an end – over 2 hrs long.

It was a great concert and would recommend anyone who is thinking about going to definitely spend the $$$ and go!

Next concert … Katy Perry! Til then…
